Abstract

This article aims to analyze the forms of religious moderation practiced within the traditions of the Dayak Bakumpai, Dayak Maanyan, and Dayak Ngaju communities, as well as to identify the Dayak sub-ethnic group with the largest Muslim population. The study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, drawing upon books, scientific journals, cultural documents, and previous research findings. The results indicate that Dayak communities in Central Kalimantan uphold the cultural values of Huma Betang, which emphasize harmonious coexistence amid religious, cultural, and customary diversity. Among the three sub-ethnic groups, the Dayak Bakumpai are the most predominantly Muslim. This condition is influenced by geographical factors, trade interactions along the Barito River, historical relations with the Banjar Sultanate, and the process of Islamic propagation, which was conducted peacefully and accommodatively toward local culture. In contrast, the Dayak Maanyan and Dayak Ngaju communities have tended to preserve the Kaharingan belief system, although some members have embraced Islam and Christianity. Local traditions such as mutual cooperation (gotong royong), customary deliberation, and respect for religious differences serve as the foundation of religious moderation within Dayak society. This study confirms that the local cultural values of the Dayak people make a significant contribution to fostering tolerance and multicultural life in Indonesia. The spirit of Huma Betang teaches that diversity is not a threat but rather a source of strength for building unity, peace, and social cohesion within the framework of the Indonesian nation.
