Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s Method of Understanding Hadith

Abstract

Prophetic Hadith constitutes the second primary source of Islamic teachings after the Qur’an, functioning as an explanation, reinforcement, and extension of Islamic doctrine. However, the complexity of the historical, social, and cultural contexts surrounding Hadith necessitates a comprehensive and contextual method of understanding. Yusuf al-Qaradawi, as one of the most prominent contemporary Muslim scholars, offers a methodological approach to understanding Hadith that does not rely solely on textual analysis but also takes into account the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah), social context, and the relevance of Hadith to modern life. This article aims to examine in depth Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s method of understanding Hadith, focusing on its epistemological foundations, core principles, and implications for the development of contemporary Hadith studies. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, analyzing al-Qaradawi’s works alongside classical and modern Hadith literature. The findings indicate that al-Qaradawi’s method emphasizes the integration of the authenticity of transmission (isnād), thematic understanding of the text (matn), the historical context of Hadith, and an orientation toward public welfare (maṣlaḥah). This approach contributes to bridging the classical tradition of Hadith scholarship with the needs of modern Muslim societies while maintaining the authority of religious texts.
