Abstract

Modernity is a global phenomenon that brings significant changes to various aspects of life, including patterns of thought, value systems, and religious practices. The advancement of science, technology, rationality, and globalization requires Muslims to respond critically so that Islamic teachings remain relevant without losing their normative values. This article aims to analyze Islamic thought in addressing the challenges of modernity from the perspective of academics at STIT Darul Hijrah Martapura. This study employs a qualitative approach using juridical-philosophical and socio-intellectual methods through a literature review and conceptual analysis of classical and contemporary Islamic scholars’ works. The findings indicate that academics at STIT Darul Hijrah Martapura view modernity not as an absolute threat but as a reality that must be approached selectively and critically. Islamic thought is positioned as an adaptive system of values, open to contemporary developments, while remaining grounded in the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the Islamic intellectual tradition. Challenges of modernity such as secularization, individualism, rationalism, and moral relativism are addressed through the strengthening of a moderate, integrative, and contextual Islamic paradigm. This article emphasizes that Islamic higher education institutions play a strategic role in developing Islamic thought that constructively bridges tradition and modernity.
